Background

Shale and Sands Oil Recovery LLC (“SASOR”) was founded in 2006 to pursue the deployment of nuclear reactors in oil sands production and oil shale production.  SASOR began by exploring various types of small and large reactors that could be useful in oil sands and oil shale production.  SASOR studied the various technologies and methods used in each of these areas of oil production, the processing of bitumen and kerogen including upgrading and then scrutinized the various nuclear reactor types that are available to fulfill these needs.  The study of nuclear reactor types included among many considerations, energy producing capability, design features and design maturity. Several reactor types were identified as appropriate for this application. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) were recognized as the best type of reactor to be used in oil sands and shale oil production. After considerable research was conducted, SASOR determined that there were no proprietary methods in the intellectual property arena that would cover and make proprietary the application of SMRs to these current and emerging oil production technologies.

SASOR concluded that filing provisional patents to address this area of intellectual property was consistent with its business interests.  After the filing of provisional patents, formal patent applications were filed in a timely manner and our intellectual property legal team worked closely with the Canadian and US authorities in perfecting the patents.  Based on the SASOR filings several patents have been approved and issued by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the US Patent and Trademark Office. SASOR's intellectual property attorneys made additional filings to create a family of patents in the case of each nation’s patent office.

In parallel to the oil extraction patents SASOR has filed patent applications in other related areas that are of great value.  One other such patent makes proprietary a specialized method for the separation of rare earth elements from each other.  This patent was issued and published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in February 2013.

All of these patents are described on this website and can be downloaded from the tabs in this website.

SASOR is now pursuing the sale of these patents to entities that have an interest related to employing or licensing nuclear energy technologies, particularly SMRs, in oil sands and/or shale oil production including upgrading and other bitumen processing needs. Similarly, our proprietary technology for the separation of rare earth elements from each other may be of great value as well given the importance of rare earth elements in electronics and many advancing technologies.  If there are any questions, comments or inquiries please do not hesitate to contact us.
